Adult Basic Education (ABE)
The Adult Literacy League helps adults improve their basic skills in reading, writing, and math through a comprehensive One-to-One and Small Group Tutoring Program. The students we serve are educationally disadvantaged native English speakers who read at or below the sixth grade level.
Simple goals such as reading to their children, getting a job or improving their employment situation are the reasons that adults with low literacy skills seek our help. Also, we help them build their skills so they can pass the GED exam, or enter post-secondary training and education.
Small group instruction is provided by paid instructor(s) and/or volunteer tutors in reading comprehension, spelling, and grammar. Small group math instruction is also available for students interested in improving computation skills.
Most students meet their trained volunteer tutor for one to two hours once or twice a week. All instruction is free but students are asked to pay a one-time $20 registration fee, and to pay for their books. No one is ever denied the opportunity to learn or to serve because of any costs involved. Students may attend class as well as work with a volunteer tutor.
