English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The high rate of immigration in Central Florida results in a high number of residents who have trouble understanding, reading or writing English.

The Adult Literacy League provides literacy and language acquisition services to adults for whom English is not a native language.

Services for ESOL students include:
- Conversational English classes
- English language literacy classes
- One-to-one instruction by trained volunteer tutors

For many of these students the goals are simple: to be able to talk to their child’s teacher, to understand policies and procedures on the job, to understand the numerous idioms and slang words commonly used in the English language.

Adult Literacy League students come from Puerto Rico, France, Russia, Haiti, Cuba, Colombia and Kenya, among numerous other countries.
