WHAT WE DO
THE IMPORTANCE OF LITERACY
We define full functional literacy as the ability to read, write, communicate in English, compute, solve problems and use technology in order to be a self-sufficient member of our community.
Every individual who becomes fully literate by this definition increases the economic strength, overall safety, and the future educational success of the next generation.
Few program outcomes have the impact force of hundreds of new literate citizens in our community. This comprehensive instructional strategy yields impressive dividends – particularly considering that we are serving adults at the lowest levels of literacy and in the greatest need, both economically and educationally.
OUR PROGRAM OFFERS
FLEXIBILITY
A number of classes for each topic are offered, so students can fit us into their real-life schedules
A “drop-in” schedule, so there are no penalties for missing class. Tutors and students set their own meeting times, to find the time best for both of them
PERSONAL ATTENTION
One-to-one tutoring helps students who struggle in a classroom setting or have – as many of our students do – some type of learning difference
Small-group, instructor-led classes allow students to freely ask questions and receive immediate feedback
Personalized intake system that focuses on students’ goals to create an individualized educational plan
DIVERSE TOPICS
Students can attend any or all classes that we offer to cover a wide variety of subject matter
We have a multi-level approach, so a single-topic class is able to span more than one level of reading ability
Our tutors are able to exchange the level of curricula at any point they believe their student has progressed, so our students can advance at their own pace
Our tutors and class instructors address different learning styles to encompass and challenge all students
