WHAT WE DO

WHAT WE DO

ASSESSMENT

When a new student comes to the Adult Literacy League with an interest in improving their education, it’s important to get an accurate picture of their starting point. This interview process determines the best curricula and classes for each student.

TUTORING

Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with students using nationally-accredited curricula to teach reading, writing, and English literacy skills. All students are eligible for tutoring and we encourage students attend both classes and tutoring sessions.

CLASSES

We provide 53 weekly drop-in classes in 12 different locations for English conversation and English language literacy (ESOL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED, math, and computer skills throughout Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties.

FAMILY LITERACY

We teach parents and grandparents how to read to their children so they become the child’s first and most effective teacher, and we supply them with books and learning materials through our Read to Me! and Read to My Baby! Book Clubs.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LITERACY

We define full functional literacy as the ability to read, write, communicate in English, compute, solve problems and use technology in order to be a self-sufficient member of our community.

Every individual who becomes fully literate by this definition increases the economic strength, overall safety, and the future educational success of the next generation.

Few program outcomes have the impact force of hundreds of new literate citizens in our community. This comprehensive instructional strategy yields impressive dividends – particularly considering that we are serving adults at the lowest levels of literacy and in the greatest need both economically and educationally.

OUR PROGRAM OFFERS

FLEXIBILITY

A number of classes for each topic are offered, so students can fit us into their real-life schedules

Dozens of approved locations for classes and tutoring throughout the tri-county area, so we are always local

Locations in the community are open every day of the week and most hours of the day, from 7:30am to 9:00pm, to remove roadblocks to learning

A “drop-in” schedule, so there are no penalties for missing class. Tutors and students set their own meeting times, to find the time best for both of them

PERSONAL ATTENTION

One-to-one tutoring helps students who struggle in a classroom setting or have – as many of our students do – some type of learning difference

Small-group, instructor-led classes allow students to freely ask questions and receive immediate feedback

Individualized intake system that focuses on students’ goals to create an individualized educational plan

DIVERSE TOPICS

Students can attend any or all classes that we offer to cover a wide variety of subject matter

We have a multi-level approach, so a single-topic class is able to span more than one level of reading ability

Our tutors are able to exchange the level of curricula at any point they believe their student has progressed, so our students can advance at their own pace

Our tutors and class instructors address different learning styles to encompass and challenge all students

The Read to Me! Book Club in our Family Literacy Program helps parents improve their reading and comprehension skills through interactive educational engagement with their children ages 0-5.
